Discounting Store items with a Sale event


Sales are a great way to promote items in your Store. You can create sales that are seasonal, for specific holidays, for specific categories, or just to clear out inventory.

Determining discounts

Fixed price listings can be discounted by a percentage or by a specific dollar amount. For example, an item selling for $10 can be discounted by 20%, or by $2. This means the item is on sale for $8 in both cases. Discounts can't be applied to auction-style listings.

You can increase the offer by adding free shipping to the listings you are discounting. If you add free shipping to your discount, it applies to the first domestic shipping service you selected when you listed your item. The free shipping discount doesn't apply to any additional services that you included in your listing.

Note: All items can be discounted by 5% to 75%. The sale price of your item appears as a Buy It Now price anywhere on the site your listings typically appear. Price discounts also show up for buyers with a special look (strikethrough pricing and the calculated discount) in the following areas:

  • Listings

  • Search results within a Store

  • Watch List section of My eBay

  • Watched Item Reminder email

  • Seller email marketing

Buyers see that your listings have a free shipping sale in these areas:

  • Listings

  • Watch List section of My eBay

  • Watched Item Reminder email

Creating and managing sales

You can create and view draft, scheduled, active, and ended sales within the Promotions manager dashboard. Sales can be scheduled for a later date or copied, and re-run, once they're over.

To create a sale in Promotions manager:
  1. Go to Seller Hub > Marketing or directly to www.ebay.com/sh/mkt/promotionmanager/dashboard.

  2. Click Promotions on the left side of the page.

  3. Click Create a Promotion.

  4. Choose Sale event + markdown.

  5. Once you create a sale, you can see it on your Promotions manager dashboard.

To edit a sale in Promotions manager:
  1. Go to Seller Hub > Marketing or directly to www.ebay.com/sh/mkt/promotionmanager/dashboard.

  2. Click Promotions on the left side of the page.

  3. Choose Edit from the Action dropdown for the corresponding sale.

Once a sale is active you will not be able to change the discount or add new items. You can edit the Sale event name, Sale event description, change the end date, or select a new image directly on the Review and launch page. To remove items, click the Edit link in the Discount type and items section and use the check box on the left to select which items you want to remove.

Understanding your item markdown report:
  1. Go to Seller Hub > Marketing or directly to www.ebay.com/sh/mkt/promotionmanager/dashboard.

  2. Click Promotions on the left side of the page.

  3. Choose Report from the Action dropdown for the corresponding sale or click Active in the Status column.

  4. The Report gives you a count of the items you selected for your sale and shows the Status of each item. Click the blue info icon by the item count to see a description of each Status.

Promoting your sales

Promote your sale by sending an email to announce your discounted listings to your Store newsletter subscribers. The number and frequency of emails you can send is based on your subscription limits and other eBay policies.

Creating and editing promotional emails for Markdowns

When you create your sale, check the Newsletter box on the Review and launch page. Your first mailing list is selected automatically.

Note:

  • A one-time email is sent to your default mailing list on the same date and time as the scheduled sale.

  • The email is only sent for sales created on the site where your Store is registered.

  • The edit your email link lets you edit the subject and message fields of your emails.

  • You can edit your promotional emails as long as the sale hasn't started.

  • If you don't want to send an email to promote your sale, do not check the box for the Newsletter.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Once the sale has begun, you will not be able to check, or uncheck, the Newsletter check box.

  • If you don't have any mailing lists, the Newsletter will not be sent. Find out more about setting up your mailing lists

Markdown rules

  • Increasing the item price for an item removes the item from a sale. You may choose to block price increases on the Review your sale event page.

  • Most sales are processed within two hours of their start, or end, time.

  • Items can be discounted 5% to 75%

  • There are minimum and maximum durations for sales. A Markdown sale must be at least 1 day and no more than 45 days long.

  • You cannot end a sale within 24 hours of the start time.

  • The minimum duration between sales is 1 day.

  • Listings cannot be double discounted. If you add a listing to a second sale while it is already discounted, it will be "Skipped" by the second sale.

  • Sales can be scheduled in advance.

You can't add a listing to a free shipping sale if it includes one or more of the following:

  • Freight shipping

  • Local pickup only

Limits to Markdown sales

Markdown sales are limited in these ways:

  • The number of listings you can add to a single Markdown sale is 500, if you are selecting items individually, or 10,000 if you are using category based rules.

  • A listing can only be in one active sale at a time, but a listing can exist in multiple scheduled and inactive sales.

  • There should be at least 1 day between sales for a particular listing.

  • An item must have been listed, with no price change, for at least 1 day before it can be included in a Markdown sale.
